January 2018 New Year Same Kid

So it's a new year and everyone is talking about how they are going to change, eat healthier, run a marathon and teach their 3 year old how to play the violin while carrying orphan dogs around the city-- totally doable, right?

Well you're looking a my NY's Resolution, help parents  of all backgrounds find ways to keep their children active at a very low cost. As a teacher and a parent, I know that most of what are kids learn comes from what they observe-- not just what's taught. Remember the mantra, do as I say not as I do?  Part of the reason we use that is because we know what we should be saying but we don't always know what to do with our kids. Cue the Wonder Woman theme song; I'm here to help! Join me on my adventure to help give my son quality experience and give your kids a reason to do --as you do.

I plan to post all of the educational, fun and free to low cost things you can do in the city. So come join me and my mini me as we explore the city of Houston.

No, this blog is not just for a certain race of kids, but it is my hope to get more kids of color out and exploring their beautiful city .

January's List of To Do's For Kids and Parents:

I. LOVE. THE. LIBRARY. They have awesome events all year long, and they are always free. Please check out your listing of events for your local library. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • January 4th- Pajama Story Time at the Alief Hennington Library ( 6:30- 7:30 pm)- Wear your pajamas and hear a story from your animated librarians! There's usually an activity that goes along with the season.
  • January 18th at the Young Library will be STEM night. Come help your tweens and teens learn exploratory activities that help them enjoy Science and Math.

January 6th- First Saturday at Home Depot- Register ahead of time online at the Home Depot website. My son and I ( mostly me) enjoy doing this crafts because they involve tools, which gives you an opportunity to introduce your budding architect to hand tools. Also, the crafts are very functional and won't just end up stuck to your fridge. This month, make a calendar with wooden blocks.

January 15th- The Houston Children's Museum will be hosting a peace rally for kids to hear about the Civil Right Movement and participate in an indoor march for peace.
Have older kids? I would encourage you to make this a day to give back. Check out the Houston Food Bank for a place to volunteer.
Looking for some traditional fun? Try the MLK Day Parade; it starts at noon in Midtown. This year's theme is the Color of Unity.

January 20th- Rosenberg Winter Fest at the Rosenberg Railroad Museum which includes Train Tours, Arts and Crafts and SNOW for the kids ( and adults who randomly jump in) to play in. The cost is $8 and little ones under 2 are free.

January 21st - The Gamma Phi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho is hosting their annual baby shower and wellness fair. New parents and parents of young kids will receive free gifts for their children, motivational speakers and a chance to win pretty awesome door prizes. Light breakfast will be served. See flier below or go here to register: gpsprojectcradlecare2018.eventbrite.com

January 29th - Chick Fil A at Highway 6 and Bellaire is serving up more than just chicken. From 6pm- 8pm they will be partnering with Home Depot for free crafts, face painting and balloon art!
