Summer Camps, Scholarships and some February Fun for the Family!

Hey Followers and Followettes!

I always find a friend to celebrate Valentine's Day with, because if Frozen taught us one thing-- it's that true love is not just from the handsome prince, it's also from your family. So here are a few ideas of what you can do if you find yourself single, or alone with the kids for Valentine's Day:

  1. Chick Fil A on Highway 6 and Bellaire ( along with other locations near you) are hosting a Valentine's Day Family Date Night on Monday February 12th. This location will be celebrating with face painting, balloon art and a visit from everyone's favorite cow!
  2. Wilson Montessori is doing a Family Dance Fundraiser this afternoon (February 10th) from 3pm- 6pm. Tickets may be available at the door, but check out their Eventbrite link for presale availability.
  3. When all else fails-- GET CRAFTY! Think about all the people in your family, schools, churches or neighborhoods and have your kids create hand made cards or baked goods to share their love with their community. Maybe it's just the teacher in me, but the crazy kid pictures where your head is bigger than your body and you don't have any legs show the most love!

A teacher and close friend of mine made these creative Valentine's Cards with her 6th graders. Thanks Mrs. Carter for sharing!

February Events
If you are already over Valentine's Day, the rest of this post is for you! Here are some really cool events for the rest of February that you can check out with your kids!

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department are offering a parent orientation and free soccer program for kids ages 2nd-8th grade at the Alief Park (11903 Bellaire Blvd). The parent orientation is February 12th at 6:30 and you can also register your kids that night as well.

Not ready to be a Soccer Mom, yet? How about Baseball? Grand Slam for Youth's registration is underway. It's a free League and Instructional Play Camp for kids ages 4-18. Check out their webpage for more information at www.houstonparks.org

Supporting our #HoustonStrong initiative all year long means that we support city programming. The library has free toddler and baby yoga, Pajama Story time and Saturday Afternoon Arts and Crafts. They also have a Fancy Nancy Tea Party-- which I'm totally psyched about! Bring your little ones dressed in their most fanciest outfits while they sip tea and share the story in the most classiest way of their little lives! Don't forget the camera!

The Houston Rodeo kicks off this year on February 27th! Make sure to check your kids' backpacks for the discount page that most schools hand out to help you buy tickets at discounted rates. Or you can click here to buy your tickets the old fashioned way. Also don't forget to dress your kiddos ups in their boots and flannel for Go Texan Day on February 23rd!

Although this isn't in February, registration is necessary to reserve your spot for the Reignbow Tutoring Company's Painting class for teens!

Summer Camps and Summer Jobs
Speaking of teens, don't forget that now is a good time to start encouraging your teens to start looking for jobs. A lot of camps have posted their jobs for the summer already! Check out this link for more information: http://hirehoustonyouth.org/

I know it's not summer yet, but Summer Camps are already registering for June and July. If the thought of camps makes your wallet cry, check out these three camps that offer full and partial scholarships for qualified students:

Club Sci Kids is a STEM based camp for kids ages 4-12 that offers scholarships to any student in need by using the link to apply.

The Museum of Natural Science is a very hands on camp for kids that also focuses on STEM. Scholarship recipients must be school aged and attend one of the schools in the city of Houston to apply.

Camp Zoofari is an amazing summer camp for kids all the way from 4-16 that gives students a close up view of animal life. This is another great camp that offers scholarships on a first come first serve basis.

Bonus: Urban Kids will be hosting a week long STEAM Camp for Girls with NASA inspired lesson plans to include 3Dprinting, Coding, Rocket building and Launching, Hidden Figures Book Club and Arts and Crafts. Click this link if you are interested and want to reserve your spot!
