Can you believe it's already March? After the crazy weather we have had this past year, I know we are all ready for a sunny Spring season! It feels like forever since I have shared with you all, so here's a pretty length list of events to do in March and a few for the summer.
March Family Fun
Don't want your kids to spend the whole Spring Break on the couch? Or maybe you just don't want them to have to make up a story about what they did during Spring Break? The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority are hosting their annual Youth Symposium on March 10th. This is a great way to kick off your kids' Spring Break and best of all it's free. This event will include the nationally recognized Run, Jump, Throw Activities, STEM programs and a very delicious lunch! Kids will be broken up by age groups to participate in age appropriate events. Fun begins at 8:30 am
If you are closer to the Woodlands, try this event on March 10th. This is sort of like a mini circus mixed with a festival and a whole lot of fun. There will be rides, exotic reptiles and really cool vendors for you and your family. There will also be a a baby pageant for you and your prince and princesses to have a chance to compete in. Give your kids something to talk about and help create lasting memories at this event!
Every Saturday morning at 8:30 and 10, Levy Park hosts a free Yoga and Boot Camp class. The park has lots of innovative and fun equipment for your kids to enjoy while you get your body Summer ready!
On March 24th, the Houston Museum of Natural Science will be hosting a Show and Tell about venomous and non venomous reptiles at the park. If your little ones are budding animal lovers check out this calendar for more information.
Red fish, green fish, one fish, two fish-- March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America Day. The Alief Hennington Library will be hosting a Seussapalooza event for your younger kiddos to experience arts and crafts, games, and a live story telling from the great author's collection.
Did you know that the Houston Public Libraries offer free meals to children ages 0-18 Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 5 pm? All you have to do is show up and your kids can participate in a well rounded dinner/late lunch after school! The library also has STEM and Coding events happening all Spring Break Week for your students of all ages to keep their minds going-- cause we all know that's what they want to do over spring break :) Click here to teach your kids a lesson-- I mean to show them how important learning is!!
Xtreme Spring Break will be happening all week long at the Houston's Children's Museum and Groupon currently has a coupon out for discounted admission to the museum!
Houston is Home to lots of great museums and Museum of Fine Arts is no exception. During Spring Break week the museum will host family friendly events from 12p-4pm. The events are included with admission and children under the age of 12 are free to enter!
Main Street Theater brings children's stories to life, like Junie B Jones and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. They offer half price tickets to their sensory friendly shows, but all are all welcome to attend on those days.
Don't forget to check out the pride and joy of Houston during your kids' week off .The Houston Rodeo is always a fun time, by try parking at a Metro/Metrorail station to avoid the congestion and high prices for parking. (Pro tip: You might want to wear your loose pants so you have room for the tasty food-- calories don't count during Spring Break!)
Easter Egg Hunts around Houston
Memorial City Mall is hosting a free Easter Egg Hunt on March 27th at 2:00-3:00 pm. This event will include balloon, face painting and prizes-- Don't forget your basket! Click here for more information and to pre register ( this event is free, but pre registration is required.).
If your weeks are not that flexible, but you'd still like to join in on the fun, try visiting Edgewood Park. Jacobs Ladder of Covenance is having its 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 24th at the park at 10 am. This even is also free and will have fun games and food as well.
I'm sure most churches will have an event for kids, but if you are not a member of one and would like to try one out-- try Chapelwood United Methodist Church's Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday March 31st. This event will have *drum roll please* a rock wall!!!
Scholarships and Featured Camps for the Summer
As a teacher I live for Summer, because I get to enjoy the city and my son's school is still open. So, I can choose to roll solo or take him along for the ride. I know that a lot of you in the 'real world' don't have those months off, so here is a list of summer camps that offer scholarships on a first come first serve basis:Main Street Theater- If your little ones (or not so little ones) are into the performing arts, check out Main Street Theater's program. This one is really unique because at the end of the camp you get to see them perform and show you all the skills they learned on your dime! If you are in need of scholarship assistance, Main Street Theater offers need based scholarships on a first come first serve basis.
Houston Health Museum- This is for the future doctors and nurses of the world! This camp mixes in STEM and health/body awareness in an age appropriate way. Click here to access information about their scholarship requirements.
The Houston Public Library offers a free summer camp for ages Elementary to High School called Camp Stream. The dates are listed on their website, but registration has not opened. Be ready to sign up, because since this one is totally free it fills up fast!
Urban Kids is hosting our own week long summer camp for girls 9-11! Your girls will learn about coding, robotics, aerospace engineering and literacy! If you are interested please click here. The first 5 girls registered will win a special prize on their first day of camp.
